Quantitative Data

This is the quantitative data that I have collected from research which was doing surveys which is my qualitative data . With the data, I have created three graphs that I can analyse and will help me with my magazine which I will be creating over the next couple of weeks.
Graph 1
The question highlights and questions people's opinions of how often a magazine should be released. As you can see the most popular option was that a music magazine should be released monthly. The magazine would be much more anticipated and valuable if it was released each month, with access to a variety of information and opportunities and could be sold at a rather higher price than a weekly magazine. Furthermore, it allows all the news and music updates to be broadcast in one magazine, making the reader believe that the purchase was worth it.

Graph 2
This approached the topic of what music genre were the people that I had asked most keen and fascinated by. The favoured genres were "Pop", "R&B", "Indie" and "Hip-Hop". This provided me with a selection of genres I could use to influence my magazine music genre.
Graph 3
Graph 3, shows the results as to what attracts the audience to purchase a magazine and to what extent does the factor have in deciding whether it largely affects the decision of purchasing the magazine It is obvious to see that "Images/ Main Images" and "Who is featuring" are the most popular choices selected as to what attracts readers to buy a magazine.

Qualitative Data

The survey I have created, in order to carry out my qualitative data was created using the website Surveymokey.com. This was a fast and uncomplicated way of collecting the data, to be given to various people between the ages of 16-19 years old. The survey will be evaluated and hopefully used to see what caters to my target market and influence the idea and what genre I may choose for my magazine around it.

The survey I created was simple and easy to complete and the answers were straight-forward, yet allowing people to add extra information if they felt that they wanted to. The survey was of ten questions which were distributed to as many people as possible, who were willing to complete the survey and participate in the data collection.

Findings Of Research

Magazine Cover 1:

Quote 1:
“The use of the colour, the use of the black, white and red…tie the whole magazine together.”

Quote 2:
“Normally, you see on every magazine, the model looking towards the camera, but the gaze is towards the side which is different.”

The magazine is distinctive from the rest in particular due to the layout and colour scheme of the magazine. The three colours were shown to really work well together and gain attention as it brought the magazine cover together. The model was dressed quite simply which complimented the colour scheme well. The gaze was different from the stereotypical “angle of gaze” and caught the attention of the reader. However, the text crowded around the artist, is slightly too much.

Magazine Cover 2:

Quote 1:
“The cracks between each member of the group, it intrigues me as to why the cracks are featured there”

Quote 2:
“Different angle of shots, the shots are quite attractive and different”

Quote 3:
“Better to follow the motto…less is more”

The magazine features the front man of the band in various poses and different angles of shots which are diverse. It suggests there are various sides to the artist, which the reader may get to discover within the contents of the magazine. The layout of the pictures with the cracks, attracts attention as the reader may question why the cracks are placed the and whether there is a reason behind it. The font of the band name is bold, however there are more than three colours and detracts the attention.

Magazine Cover 3:

Quote 1:
“The long-shot is rare and very different”

Quote 2:
“It’s simple, and not crowded with text”

Quote 3:
“The background is different, it looks more natural rather than in a studio”

The long shot of the band is unique as it is very uncommon. The layout of the magazine is very simple, as there is not much text due to the group shot, which would have made it difficult to place the text. Due to the simplicity of the magazine, it draws the reader’s attention as to what may be in the content of the magazine.

Focus Group

Since, obtaining my research I have created a focus group which consists of three people who I asked various questions to about their opinion of the three music magazine that are of the indie genre.

The focus group was of people who had previously done my survey and were fans of the genre that I am hoping to influence my magazine on which is independent rock genre. By asking them a few question of magazine covers that were influenced by the genre or of an artist of the genre, I could observe and also analyse.

Research Rationale

In order to gain a large understanding of what my target audience will have to be, I will carry out research before finding my focus group for the genre of music I will have chosen. Firstly, I would ask questions in both quantitive and qualitative data form, to gain a variety of answers to broaden my research. The qualitative data would consist of doing surveys which ask about what genre they are interested in and also their range of price for a magazine and so forth. This would enable to decide what genre I am most comfortable to do, or if there is a niche in the market which I may want to explore. The data will be asked to people between 16-19 years old, as I have a large access to them by being in sixth form, and also because I am a teenager myself therefore I can relate and compare to their opinions. I have given a variety of questions which either require specific answers such as “yes” or “no”, however there are also questions which may require the person to explain their reason of their choice and the impact of the choice. I also carried out quantitive data by reproducing my answers as graphs, to show my answers in a statistical way, which could easily be observed and analysed to see what will interest my target audience and whether it will be successful. The survey will include questions that I have created or chosen that will benefit and give me an understanding of the future of my magazine. These are the questions that I will ask to teenager who are 16-19 years old:

 • What attracts you to buy a magazine?
• How much do you think a music magazine should cost?
• How often do you buy a music magazine?
 • What genre do you listen to?
 • How often do you think a music magazine should be replaced?
 • Is the brand a significant factor, to why you would purchase a magazine?

Music Magazine Covers

This Slideshare consists of an analysis and interpretation of three different music magazine covers each from different music genres, explained in detail as to why and what is placed in there and how this affects the magazine and also the reader.

The deconstruction of the three magazines was to be able to gain an understanding of each magazine and grasp the theme and convention of music magazines and be able to gain inspiration, ideas and opinions from the analysis.

Our Brief

Our brief is to create a magazine over the next couple of weeks until March. The music magazine will consist of a magazine cover, contents page and also a spread. The magazine has to be influenced by a genre of music that is interesting to me personally, and that I can work well with. I am personally quite nervous to start this task yet also willing to put the effort in, so that the outcome is positive. I aim to reflect and evaluate my own work as much as possible, so that it may follow the brief as much as possible.

The initial ideas towards my magazine are to do with who am I aiming it towards, how can it appeal to my audience, what genre is my magazine inspired by and why. The initial ideas for my magazine is that I may use the independent Rock genre, as I am personally keen of the genre and I previously did research on the genre so my knowledge for the genre is quite large. I have been thinking about the audience that I may target, I have decided that I may target people in their teens and also young adults, who have a keen interest in the genre that I decide to influence my magazine with.

Although, I have some initial ideas they still will need major development and the standards I have set myself may be different from the actual outcome of the magazine.
